Creative Writing

  • Workshop's Description: Einstein said "Imagination is everything" and that "Imagination is more important than knowledge" but in our lives today we rarely allow ourselves to indulge our creativity. The goal of this workshop is to set our imaginations free through the written word-using poetry and short fiction and non-fiction to create stories, to push our limits, and to learn more about our inner selves. We will use different exercises to challenge our brains and open our creativity while we write extensively throughout the week, and we will read great poetry and short prose as well as watch short videos and films for inspiration. We will workshop our pieces together to improve them. Students will explore the possibilities of micro fiction, and see if we can write a better short short story than this shortest of short stories (attributed to Hemingway): "For sale: baby shoes. Never worn." There are too few opportunities to focus on our creative expressions during the regular school day, so Week Without Walls is the perfect opportunity to devote ourselves to this vital aspect of self expression!

Mmmmmm! - Gourmet Dining in Guadalajara

  • Workshop's Description: This experience will focus on refining our sensibilities to appreciate the outstanding fine dining opportunities that pervade our city. With our urban lifestyles (and with taco stands at every corner), many of us make light of Luciano Pavarotti's reflection on food:
"One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating."
Make no mistake about it, during this workshop, our entire day will be centered on food. Each morning will be spent learning from distinguished restauranteers, chefs, food critics and farmers on topics as practical as "An overview of the restaurant industry" and as esoteric as "What makes white truffles (Tuber Magnatum Pico) from the San Miniato region of Italy worth $5,900 USD/pound". Each afternoon, we will put theory to practice as we dine as special guests of the executive chef at one of the best restaurants in town. Though cooking techniques will be discussed and occasionally practiced in our morning sessions, this workshop is mostly oriented to those who love to eat. If you have an adventurous appetite, come join us.

Your Own Show at the MoMA

Through the filter of New York's Museum of Modern Art we'll discuss, ponder, play with, celebrate, and create modern art. You will start with some of your own experiments and become a modern master of international distinction (At least that's how we'll introduce you to the world). Finally, we'll create a group presentation that tackles an issue of global importance-through art! At the end of the week, we'll print posters, postcards, and display originals as we enjoy a gala exhibit somewhere on the ASFG campus-certainly much warmer than in New York City! 3000 pesos per student includes week-long instruction, all materials to create art, as well as printed posters and postcards to keep of our various shows.

First Aid and Wilderness Survival

  • Workshop's Description: In this workshop we will investigate the foundations of emergency first aid, and explore the great outdoors as we practice emergency medical scenarios in the wilderness. During the first two days, we will build the foundations of first aid as we get nationally certified in basic life-saving techniques of first aid and CPR. Once we have laid the groundwork for emergency first aid, we will extend these skills as we take our first aid course into the mountains of Tepic.
After exploring these first aid foundations, we will venture into the wilderness to practice our skills at a nature preserve in the mountains. We will travel to the vast nature preserve, Ojo de Cielo, located in a great expanse of mountains near Tepic. There we will explore the wilderness as we hike in the mountainous environment and do such activities as rope propelling near majestic waterfalls. We will practice a variety of emergency medical scenarios, as we put our first aid skills to the test in this natural environment. In addition, we will gain wilderness survival skills such as building emergency fires, stretchers, and shelters. Through this course you will gain the skills to confidently respond to any medical emergency, even in the most remote wilderness environment.
