First Grade
First grade is a time of tremendous growth and important transitions. Studentsengage in meaningful learning activities to meet grade level learning goals. They further develop their reading and writing skills through thematic units and work towards becoming independent learners and creative thinkers. First grade highlights include:
- Integration: Students learn about animal groups, the solar system, maps, family and friends, and holidays and traditions through integrated units.
- Learning Centers: Effective reading strategies are taught through the use of learning centers which include: math games, guided reading groups, computer programs, response journals, grammar and phonic activities, etc.)
- Manipulatives: Hands-on learning experiences help to make real life connections with classroom curriculum.
- Oral Proficiency: Language is developed through activities such as: “partner talk,” sharing time and Student Led Conferences.
