Brian Merrill Award
“This award is presented in loving memory of Brian Merrill, a dedicated educator and former ASFG Middle School Principal. Mr. Merrill strongly believed in the value and need for student involvement in community service. Through his leadership, service learning was initiated and has since flourished in our Middle School. The recipient of this prestigious honor is a deserving eighth grade graduate who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to Middle School service learning projects over a minimum period of two years.”
In the spring of 2005, the ASFG Middle School inaugurated the Brian Merrill Service Learning Award in honor of the legacy of service learning that Brian, our beloved Principal from 1997-2004, left ASFG when he passed away in May, 2004. Students who are honored with this award receive a small trophy, have their names inscribed on a plaque in the Middle School Office, and receive a cash donation that they can direct to the service learning organization of their choice.
In 1997, Brian presented the Middle School staff with his vision of service learning at ASFG. One of the most important characteristics was that our students be given a voice in deciding which programs to become involved in, who would benefit from their efforts, and what they as students would engage in to support the chosen organization. In the years since, Middle School students have raised hundreds of thousands of pesos for their service learning organizations, have dedicated many hours working hand in hand with their chosen recipient organizations, and have made many new friendships with other children in the Guadalajara community who live under very different circumstances. Our students have come to value and enjoy working to improve the lives of others and their communities.
