Academic and Socialization Assistance Program (ASAP)

KAREN CORONA - Director of Academic Support
I’ve lived in Guadalajara and worked at ASFG for more than 30 years. I’ve taught mostly in the elementary section, but also have taught middle and high school students. During these years I’ve also been in charge of curriculum, started the Admissions Office, have been the director of Support Services for two different periods of time, and now am the Academic Support Director. In this role I supervise the ASAP program for students from third language backgrounds. I also supervise all the external and standardized testing used to assess student learning and our educational programs. These are exams such as the MAP tests students in second through tenth grade take, the ENLACE tests, the ERB writing samples, PSAT, AP exams and TOEFL. Studying the data from these test results gives us the opportunity to improve learning in every section of the school.

I’m from New York and never imagined when I was studying to be a teacher that I would move so far away. Since then I’ve completed a Masters Degree in International Education from Lesley College and another from Framingham State in Educational Leadership. I believe that as educators we should set the example by continuing to be life-long learners ourselves.

ADRIANA FREGOSO
I’m Adriana Fregoso.  I was born here in Guadalajara but grew up in Reno, Nevada, where I graduated from the university with a degree in education. Later I finished my Masters Degree in Education from Framingham State College.  My experience as a teacher has been mainly with second language learners.  I love to be in the world of languages and speak Spanish, English and Italian.  This is my seventh year here at ASFG as a teacher in ASAP so now I am learning Japanese through my students.  I enjoy writing stories and poetry.  I believe knowledge is a lifelong journey.  Teaching for me is an open invitation to wisdom and most importantly, it is an on-going self-paced process.  Come and join in!

KARLA MEDRANO- TA
Hello! My name is Karla; I’m the Teacher/Administrative Assistant in Academic Support. Before joining the ASFG I worked in the corporate world for about three years, first in Boston and latter in Seattle, but it was not until this year that I decided to try the academic life and I’m happy to say that I’m really enjoying my time here. Working with children and teenagers is really fun and enlightening.

The purpose of the Academic and Socialization Assistance Program (ASAP) is to prepare limited English speaking students who are foreign to both American and Mexican cultures with necessary skills to function successfully in the regular ASFG program.

ASAP is a school within a school, providing an individualized learning program for students from 3rd language backgrounds who would not other wise be able to attend ASFG.

A small multi-aged group of students receives instruction from two specially trained educators in order to accelerate their acquisition of English.

Computers are an integral part of the ASAP classroom. Students use a state of the art English program to increase vocabulary, practice oral language skills, and compose their own stories. Computers provide the opportunity for individualized work supervised by the teachers.

ASAP students take advantage of the wonderful facilities at ASFG such as the well-stocked libraries, swimming pool, gym, playground, and the extracurricular programs.

Socialization is a key component of ASAP. Classroom buddies as well as teachers help ASAP students integrate in social activities. Awareness of cultural differences, American, Mexican and others, helps our students to "feel at home" every step of the way.

ASAP accepts students from primary through high school. Younger children enter regular early childhood classes learning English along with their classmates. Students may have limited English, or no previous knowledge of English. Spanish is not a requirement. General requirements are the same as for regular admissions to the school.

The American School is the only institution in Guadalajara that offers a unique program designed to integrate foreign students into our high quality school.
