Mr. Yehuda Hershowitz & Mr. Kenneth Crowl 1977 – 1981
Yehuda Hershowitz replaced Mr. Holmdohl as director of the American School Foundation of Guadalajara in 1977. He came from New York City with his wife, Elena, who became director of the English program in primary. He tried to reorganize the financial structure of the school, introducing departmental budgets for the first time. However he only stayed at the school for a year, being succeeded in 1978 by Kenneth Crowl. Mr. Crowl had formerly been director of the American School in Manila, Philippines. He faced considerable teacher unrest during his three year tenure due to the financial instability of the school.
In Mexico there was a new administration led by President José López Portillo. The economy was saved by the discovery of new oil reserves and the high price of oil on world markets. By 1981 Mexico was the world’s fourth leading oil producer, a fact that gave Mexico international respect and its president the courage to stand up to the US. Mexico was among the first Latin American countries to announce it would not support the US boycott of the Moscow Olympics. The increase in oil earnings gave Mexico a new but false confidence as future crises would show.
